The Elections (Amendment) Bill, 2024 was approved by the Senate in December 2024 before being forwarded to the National Assembly. It was introduced in the House in February 2025 and referred to the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC), which has yet to present its findings to MPs.

Petition seeks law change to allow candidates’ common names on ballot papers

The petition, presented by Wajir resident Mohamed Alasow, asks Parliament to revive and pass the Elections (Amendment) Bill, 2021. He argues that many Kenyans recognise candidates by their nicknames or commonly used names instead of the official names appearing on identification documents.
