Uganda’s long-serving leader Yoweri Museveni has secured another term in office after the Electoral Commission declared him the winner of the presidential election, extending his rule to nearly four decades.

The commission on Saturdaysaid Museveni won 7.9 million votes, giving him a clear lead over his rivals in a contest held under heavy security and tense political conditions.

According to the Electoral Commission, the 80-year-old president maintained a strong advantage throughout the vote count, reinforcing his grip on power since first taking office in 1986.

The election period was marked by heightened political pressure, with security forces deployed across the country as authorities moved to control unrest and protests.

Museveni campaigned on a message of stability, economic progress and regional safety, arguing that steady leadership was necessary to safeguard Uganda’s future. He told supporters that continuity in government was key to sustaining development and protecting the country from instability.

The result has, however, been rejected by opposition leaders, who claim the vote did not reflect the will of the people. National Unity Platform leader Bobi Wine accused authorities of overseeing a process marred by irregularities, voter intimidation and manipulation.

Opposition figures say the election environment made it difficult for voters and candidates to participate freely, and they insist the outcome lacks credibility. They have called for accountability over the conduct of the poll, deepening political divisions in the country.

Museveni’s victory secures him a seventh term, further extending one of Africa’s longest-running presidencies. His continued rule comes at a time when Uganda remains politically polarised, with tensions between the government and opposition showing little sign of easing.
