Zanzibar leader Hussein Ali Mwinyi has been given another five years in office after the electoral body confirmed that he took the clear majority of votes in the just-concluded elections.
The Zanzibar Electoral Commission announced on Thursday night that Mwinyi received 74.8 per cent in the poll held on Wednesday, cementing his position and extending his leadership of the islands.
ZEC chairperson George Joseph Kazi declared that the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi candidate outpaced ten challengers from different opposition parties.
“Mwinyi, the candidate of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party, won 74.8 percent of the vote in Wednesday's elections, beating 10 contenders from opposition parties,” Kazi stated while reading the official results.
He explained that participation across Zanzibar was strong, saying turnout went beyond 88 per cent.
According to the commission, polling stations across the semi-autonomous region recorded high activity from early morning until closing time, pointing to a keen interest from citizens in the electoral process.
Mwinyi first assumed office in 2020 and is now set to serve his second term leading the Zanzibar Revolutionary Government. His win continues the ruling party’s long tradition of maintaining control in Zanzibar’s political landscape.
With this renewed mandate, he is expected to continue steering government programs and ongoing policy priorities that were initiated in his first term.
In his announcement, Kazi underlined that the process had been conducted under the commission’s set procedures, confirming that the figures represented official certified results.
No major disruptions were reported during the voting period, with authorities earlier noting that preparations, security and logistics had been set to ensure smooth voting across the islands.
The election drew attention within the country as voters turned up in large numbers, showing interest in shaping the future direction of the archipelago.
The final outcome confirmed that Mwinyi’s support across the islands remained strong as he defeated all his rivals to secure another five years at the helm.
Mwinyi’s second term will begin immediately as the commission’s declaration clears the way for continuation of government activities and transition into a new leadership cycle.
As he begins another chapter of governance, public attention will now shift to how he guides the administration and responds to the expectations of communities across the islands.
