President William Ruto has pledged continued support to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), describing it as a vital pillar of Kenya’s democracy whose unity and strength are essential for the nation’s political stability.
Speaking at the funeral of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology in Bondo, Siaya County, Ruto urged the party to remain cohesive as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election.
“I want to tell you, we will respect ODM. We will support you to hold ODM together,” Ruto said.
“ODM must be strong as we go to 2027 because that is the way we are going to have a strong government.”
The President highlighted the role of political parties in sustaining democracy, national unity, and accountability, stressing that meaningful development and good governance cannot exist without stable political institutions.
“Political parties are the foundations of any meaningful democracy,” he said.
“The future of ODM, its strength, and its well-being matter a great deal to me because that is how we are going to have a strong nation, by having strong, vibrant, national political parties.”
Ruto praised ODM’s deep national roots and its historical struggle for justice and reform, emphasizing the central role played by its founder, Raila Odinga, in shaping Kenya’s democratic journey. He assured supporters that the government would continue to acknowledge and respect ODM’s contributions to national politics.
“We will either form the next government or be part of the next government. That is what we can do,” Ruto declared, earning applause from mourners gathered at the university grounds.
Observers noted that the President’s remarks were intended to strengthen ties and promote collaboration between his administration and ODM, especially following the recent broad-based government arrangement that included Raila’s allies.
Ruto called on all Kenyans to carry forward Raila’s vision of a peaceful, democratic, and inclusive nation.
“Raila’s contribution to the unity of our nation and the fight for democracy will not be forgotten,” he said.
“Our responsibility now is to build on that foundation and make Kenya stronger.”
The funeral service, which drew dignitaries from across Africa, served not only as a tribute to Raila Odinga’s enduring legacy but also as a reflection on Kenya’s political future and the importance of strong parties in shaping it.
