Okwiri claimed the seat with 1,952 votes, narrowly defeating Joel Ongoro of the MDG, who garnered 1,541 votes.

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) celebrated a historic breakthrough after its candidate, Aduda Okwiri, emerged victorious in the Kisa East Ward by-election, marking the party’s first-ever win in elective politics.

The triumph comes as a boost for the young party, signaling growing support among voters.

Okwiri claimed the seat with 1,952 votes, narrowly defeating Joel Ongoro of the MDG, who garnered 1,541 votes.

The by-election drew a competitive field, with candidates including Abraham Ayaya of DAP-K, Khatete Mumia of KANU, David Muchelule of the Agano Party, Douglas Shitote of UDP, Raphael Namai of DNA, Pauline Uside of JFP, John Masetu of ODM, and Stephen Amwayi of UDM.

The Kisa East seat had been left vacant after the tragic death of former MCA Stephen Maloba, who was attacked and killed by unknown assailants last year. Voters turned out to fill the gap, with Okwiri ultimately prevailing after a closely fought contest.

The win represents not just a personal victory for Okwiri, but also a milestone for DCP, which has until now struggled to gain representation in elective positions. Party leaders have hailed the result as proof that their message is resonating with grassroots voters.

“This is a historic moment for us,” said Okwiri after being declared the winner. “I will work tirelessly to serve the people of Kisa East and ensure their voices are heard in the county assembly.”
