Sakaja confirms 24-Hour flood mitigation measures across Nairobi

Sakaja confirmed that the County Disaster Management and Risk Department has mobilised all available personnel and resources. Residents were urged to remain vigilant, follow safety guidance, and use emergency hotlines whenever necessary.

Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja has assured residents that the county is fully prepared to handle the ongoing heavy rains, with emergency services activated to protect lives and property.


In a statement released on Friday night, March 6, 2026, Sakaja said all county resources are on high alert and teams are deployed to respond rapidly to any flooding or damage.


“The Nairobi City County Government wishes to update members of the public on the current rainfall situation and the comprehensive measures currently in place to safeguard lives and property across the capital,” the governor said.

“The Nairobi City County Disaster Management and Risk Department has fully mobilised all available resources and personnel to manage the situation, urging residents to remain vigilant, prioritise their safety, and utilise the emergency hotlines provided,” Sakaja added.


To coordinate the response, the county has activated its Multi-Sectoral Disaster and Flood Mitigation Committee, which is providing 24-hour monitoring and rapid intervention services.

Emergency teams, including the ‘Green Army’ and technical staff from the Mobility and Works sector, have been dispatched across all 17 sub-counties to clear blocked drains and waterways. The county is working alongside KeNHA and KURA to ensure that major roads remain passable. KURA contractors have been instructed to remove fallen trees, clear debris, and unblock drainage systems to safeguard motorists and pedestrians.


“The ‘Green Army’ and technical teams from the Mobility and Works sector are deployed across all 17 sub-counties for emergency de-silting of drains and clearing of waterways,” Sakaja said.


“NCCG is working in close coordination with KeNHA and KURA to ensure major road arteries remain motorable. Specifically, all KURA contractors have been directed to be on the ground immediately to conduct urgent mitigation on their corridors. This includes opening up drainage blockages, removing fallen trees, and clearing debris to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians.”


All emergency personnel are on standby and actively conducting rescue operations in affected areas. Fire and Disaster Management units, equipped with specialised tools, have been deployed to identified flood-prone zones. A Multi-Agency team, including the National Police Service and the Kenya Red Cross, is coordinating field responses for maximum efficiency.

Authorities have identified low-lying areas and informal settlements at high risk of flooding. Temporary evacuation centres with essential supplies have been established to accommodate residents from these zones.

Sakaja stressed that public safety remains the county’s top priority. He urged residents to adhere strictly to official guidance, stay alert to changing road conditions, and exercise caution during the rains.


“Avoid Crossing Swollen Rivers: Do not attempt to cross flooded roads or bridges on foot or in vehicles. Electrical Safety: Stay away from downed power lines and do not stand under trees during storms,” he said.


“Report Blockages: Use the provided hotlines to report blocked drains or infrastructure damage.”
