The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), in a statement released in the early hours of Sunday, said the resumption follows successful emergency response operations, including fire suppression, site containment, and safety assessments.

Normal traffic flow has resumed along Nairobi’s Southern Bypass following a tanker tragedy on Saturday, January 24, 2026, that claimed the life of one person.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), in a statement released in the early hours of Sunday, said the resumption follows successful emergency response operations, including fire suppression, site containment, and safety assessments.

“KeNHA has now opened the road for traffic following complete restoration works done in collaboration with the Traffic Police and other emergency agencies,” said the authority.

“Motorists have now resumed normal traffic along the Southern Bypass.”

However, KeNHA advised road users to exercise caution, adhere to posted traffic signs, and follow directions issued by traffic police on site as traffic flow stabilizes.

The authority also lauded road users for their patience during the tragedy on Saturday that killed one person and left another injured.

The deceased was one of the drivers involved in a collision between a lorry carrying bales of flour and a fuel tanker near a bridge behind the Carnivore Restaurant.

Another driver was rescued from the scene and rushed to the hospital, Lang’ata Sub-County Police Commander Pius Mwanthi confirmed.

Following the impact, the fuel tanker slid under the bridge and ignited, triggering a massive blaze that threatened nearby structures.

KeNHA had earlier issued a statement warning the public about the incident.

Acting Director-General Eng. Luka Kimeli said the fire posed a major explosion risk and forced the temporary closure of the bypass to allow emergency responders to operate safely.

“Motorists are urged to strictly follow directions issued by traffic police and emergency responders,” he said, adding that all measures were being taken to restore safety and normal traffic flow.

Authorities implemented traffic management measures, directing motorists to use alternative routes, including Lang’ata Road, and warned the public to avoid the area due to the extreme danger posed by the fuel fire. Residents in nearby areas were advised to remain alert as emergency operations continued.
