Motorists using the Kaplong–Kisii highway have been urged to exercise caution and seek alternative routes after flooding rendered a key bridge section impassable, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced.
In a traffic advisory issued on March 21, 2026, KeNHA said the Kipsonoi River Bridge at Mugeni, located between Sotik and Chebilat along the Kaplong–Kisii (B6) Road, had experienced significant flooding following heavy rainfall in upstream catchment areas.
“The Kipsonoi River Bridge at Mugeni… has experienced flooding, rendering the section unsafe for motorable traffic,” the authority said in the advisory.
According to KeNHA, the flooding was triggered by sustained rains that caused a sharp rise in water levels, submerging sections of the bridge and posing a risk to road users.
The agency warned that the situation could worsen if rainfall continues in the affected catchment zones.
“The situation has been occasioned by heavy rainfall in the upstream catchment areas, resulting in a significant rise in water levels,” the statement noted.
Motorists have been strongly cautioned against attempting to cross the flooded section and advised to strictly follow directions issued by traffic police and marshals deployed on site.
KeNHA emphasized that compliance with safety instructions is critical to preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of all road users.
“Motorists are strongly advised to exercise caution and strictly adhere to instructions issued by police officers and traffic marshals on site to ensure their safety,” the authority said.
To ease movement and minimiSe disruption, KeNHA outlined alternative routes for affected travelers. Motorists heading toward Chebilat and Keroka have been advised to use the Kaplong–Sotik–Roret–Ikonge–Chebilat–Keroka route, which is paved and accessible. Meanwhile, those travelling to Kisii are encouraged to follow the Kaplong–Sotik–Roret–Ikonge–Kisii route.
The authority said it is closely monitoring the situation and will take further action depending on how water levels evolve.
“KeNHA is closely monitoring the situation and will take appropriate action should water levels continue to rise,” the statement added.
The disruption is expected to affect transport and trade along the busy B6 corridor, which connects parts of Bomet and Kisii counties and serves as a key link for movement of goods and passengers in the region.
KeNHA Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli expressed appreciation for public cooperation during the period of disruption, underscoring the agency’s commitment to road safety.
“The Authority appreciates your cooperation as we work to ensure the safety of all road users,” he said.
The advisory comes amid ongoing heavy rains in several parts of the country, which have led to localised flooding and infrastructure challenges.
Authorities continue to urge vigilance among motorists, especially in flood-prone areas, as weather conditions remain unpredictable.
