President extends tenure of key State Agency board chairs

The reappointments were confirmed in a gazette notice dated April 17, 2026, with the changes taking effect later in April. The decision keeps in place leadership at institutions seen as central to ongoing government programmes.

President William Samoei Ruto has renewed the terms of four non-executive chairpersons across key state corporations, securing continuity in agencies linked to energy, water management, trade, and industrial development.

The reappointments were confirmed in a gazette notice dated April 17, 2026, with the changes taking effect later in April. The decision keeps in place leadership at institutions seen as central to ongoing government programmes.

At the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation, Godfrey Lemiso will continue serving as non-executive chairperson from April 20, 2026, under provisions of the Energy Act. The corporation is responsible for expanding access to electricity, especially in rural areas, and supports the country’s shift toward renewable energy.

The notice also addressed the leadership of the Ewaso Ng’iro South River Basin Development Authority, where Samuel Sakita Kutata has been retained for another three-year term.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 4 (1) (a) of the Ewaso Ng’iro South River Basin Development Authority Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, re-appoint Samuel Sakita Kutata as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Ewaso Ng’iro South River Basin Development Authority, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 17th April, 2026," the notice further reads.

The authority oversees sustainable development within the basin, focusing on natural resource management and improving livelihoods in surrounding areas.

In the trade and manufacturing space, Richard Cheruiyot will remain at the helm of the Export Processing Zones Authority board for another three years beginning April 20, 2026. The agency promotes export-driven investment by supporting industries operating within special economic zones and ensuring compliance with licensing and operational standards.

The President has also extended the tenure of Adan Mohammed as chairperson of the Kenya Leather Development Council board.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by paragraph 4 (1) (a) of the Kenya Leather Development Council Order, 2011, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-inChief of the Defence Forces, re-appoint— Adan Mohammed as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Board of the Kenya Leather Development Council, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 17th April, 2026," it states.

The council works to grow the leather sector by strengthening production, processing, and export capacity within the value chain.

Under Kenyan law, non-executive chairpersons of state corporations serve fixed terms that can be renewed depending on policy direction and performance. The latest notice formalises the extension of tenure for the four officials, allowing the institutions to maintain steady leadership as they continue implementing their mandates.
