Detectives have arrested three suspects linked to a case of gang rape and robbery with violence in Butere Sub-County, following a coordinated intelligence-led operation.
The arrests were carried out by officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) and the Operation Action Team (OAT) after weeks of investigations into the January 28, 2026 incident.
According to police, the suspects allegedly broke into a local shop in Butere under the cover of darkness before attacking the shopkeeper.
“After gaining entry, the suspects assaulted the victim and committed a gang rape before fleeing,” investigators said.
The assailants are also accused of stealing goods valued at approximately Sh200,000, along with an undisclosed amount of cash from the day’s sales.
Police described the incident as a serious crime that left the victim traumatised and the local community shaken.
Following the attack, detectives launched what they termed a “swift and targeted manhunt” to track down those responsible.
The operation led officers to Mabungo village, where two suspects—identified as Benard Yaya Anaswa and Kelvin Omutanyi Zablon—were arrested.
During interrogation, the two allegedly provided information that led detectives to Shirota village, where a third suspect, Peter Osumba Omusinde, was apprehended.
Investigators believe the three were directly involved in the attack and robbery.
In a related development, police extended the operation to Sabatia Market, where they arrested Johnstone Songa Maube, who is suspected of handling stolen goods linked to the incident.
“Recovered from the suspect were assorted mobile phones believed to be part of the stolen items,” police said, adding that the items have been secured as exhibits.
All suspects are currently in custody and are undergoing processing ahead of their arraignment in court on charges expected to include robbery with violence and gang rape.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to pursuing justice for victims of violent crime, urging members of the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) also called on citizens to report criminal activity through its toll-free hotline or anonymous communication channels, assuring informants of confidentiality and protection.
