Kenya’s 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results show a slight improvement in overall performance, with Mathematics emerging as the best-performing subject.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced the results on Friday at AIC Chebisas High School in Eldoret, noting that the examinations were graded under the revised KCSE system.

“Mathematics remains a compulsory and key determinant of the overall grade, and it has emerged as the best-performing subject in the 2025 KCSE examination,” Ogamba said.

A total of 1,932 candidates, representing 0.19 per cent of those who sat the exams, attained a mean grade of A (plain), up from 1,693 candidates (0.18 per cent) in 2024.

The number of students qualifying for direct university admission with a mean grade of C+ and above increased to 270,715 (27.18 per cent), compared to 246,391 (25.53 per cent) last year.

Those scoring C- and above rose to 507,131 (50.92 per cent), while candidates attaining D+ and above increased to 634,082 (63.67 per cent), up from 605,774 (62.76 per cent) in 2024.

Ogamba highlighted trends in subject performance, noting that 17 subjects improved while 11 registered declines. Gender analysis showed female candidates performed better in six language subjects, while male students outperformed females in 11 other subjects.

The CS also pointed out demographic changes, saying the number of candidates aged 16 years and below rose from about 20,000 in 2024 to 26,391 in 2025. “These results reflect both areas of progress and those that require targeted intervention as we continue to strengthen teaching and learning outcomes across the country,” Ogamba said.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) confirmed that candidates can access their results online only through the KNEC website.

To check results, candidates should enter their index number and one of their registered names, accept the privacy and access notice, and click search. “Visit the web address: https://results.knec.ac.ke or visit the KNEC website and click on KCSE RESULTS, enter the candidate’s Index Number and at least one name, accept the privacy and access notice and Search for the results,” KNEC said.

The results released on Friday are provisional, and any queries must be submitted through the head of the candidate’s school within 30 days. Queries submitted after this period will attract a fee. “Congratulations to all the candidates,” said KNEC CEO David Njengere.

In a move to address past issues with withheld certificates due to unpaid school fees, the Ministry of Education has introduced a new collection system. Students will now collect their KCSE certificates from sub-county education offices instead of their former schools.
