Chief Protus Wechuli, affectionately known as 'Chief wa Misheveve' has officially retired, closing the chapter on a vibrant public service career.
On April 5, 2025, the people of Saboti in Trans Nzoia County gathered to honour the beloved chief during a retirement celebration that drew citizens from all walks of life, paying tribute to his iconic communication style and widespread appeal.
Wechuli rose to national prominence after a viral video captured his humorous recounting of a domestic incident involving a young man who flew into a rage after being served pumpkin leaves (misheveve) instead of his favored African kales (Sukuma wiki).
The dispute escalated into a scuffle, which the chief vividly narrated using colorful local idioms and animated expressions, endearing him to audiences across the country.
“Alianza kwa kutafuna mzee vidole kama omena (Translation: He started biting his father's fingers as if he was eating dagaa),” Wechuli famously described, leaving Kenyans in stitches.
Though the video was originally recorded in 2008, it resurfaced online years later and catapulted Wechuli into internet stardom.
His unfiltered storytelling, relatable content, and impeccable comedic timing won the hearts of millions and cemented his place as a beloved online personality.
In a previous media interview, Chief Wechuli explained that the now-famous clip was simply a moment from a routine community baraza, never meant for wide circulation.
His flair for dramatic delivery struck again when he introduced Trans Nzoia Agriculture CEC Phanice Khatundi with his trademark theatrics—referring to her as “kitovu chetu cha Trans Nzoia County” (the navel of our county) and using vibrant language to comment on her attire.
Over the years, Wechuli evolved from a viral figure into a deeply respected community leader, known for his engaging public meetings that tackled local issues with a unique blend of humour and genuine concern for his people.
