Kenya and Senegal have agreed to strengthen cooperation across seven key sectors following bilateral talks between President William Ruto and Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in Nairobi.

The discussions focused on frameworks for collaboration, trade and economic growth, youth and sports development, energy, peace and security, African Union reforms, and multilateral cooperation.

President Ruto said the partnership seeks to promote prosperity, sustainable development, and closer ties between the two nations.

“Our collaboration in these sectors aims not only to enhance prosperity but also to promote sustainable development between our nations. We are united in our determination to capitalise on these synergies for the mutual benefit of our citizens and the continued advancement of our bilateral relations,” he said.

A major highlight of the meeting was the signing of a Visa Waiver Agreement allowing citizens of both countries visa-free travel for up to 90 days.

President Ruto described the deal as a milestone that will foster stronger people-to-people connections, tourism, trade, and investment.

To further enhance engagement, both leaders agreed to establish a Joint Cooperation Commission (JCC), which will serve as a platform to monitor and expand bilateral relations.

Kenya will host the inaugural JCC session in the second half of 2026 to develop new cooperation instruments in sectors of mutual interest.

On trade and economic cooperation, the two leaders acknowledged that trade volumes between Kenya and Senegal remain low and committed to removing barriers that hinder growth.

They pledged to improve transport and digital infrastructure, harmonise standards, and encourage business-to-business linkages.

The two nations also reaffirmed their support for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, frameworks that promote industrialisation, integration, and sustainable development across the continent.

In sports and youth development, President Ruto welcomed Senegal’s support as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

He said both countries will collaborate through exchange programmes for coaches and athletes, co-hosting regional tournaments, and establishing joint training camps.

“By combining Kenya’s strength in athletics and Senegal’s prowess in football, we aim to uplift our youth and enhance cultural diplomacy,” he said.

Discussions also focused on energy, extractives, and the blue economy, where the leaders underscored the importance of cooperation in port development, fisheries, maritime governance, and ocean transportation. They agreed to explore joint opportunities in petroleum exploration and production to enhance energy security and economic growth.

On peace and security, both presidents reaffirmed their commitment to promoting stability in the region.

They agreed to support inclusive strategies for resolving conflicts through regional, continental, and international efforts.

The two heads of state also discussed African Union institutional reforms, pledging to advance the AU’s transformation agenda to strengthen its effectiveness, governance, and ability to deliver on the continent’s development goals.

In multilateral cooperation, Kenya and Senegal committed to working together to promote fair representation within the United Nations and strengthen the multilateral system to effectively address global challenges such as climate change, peace, and sustainable development.

President Ruto thanked President Faye for his visit, describing it as a demonstration of African solidarity and partnership.

“Kenya remains a strong and unwavering partner as well as a committed friend of Senegal,” Ruto concluded.

The visit marked a significant step in Nairobi’s growing diplomatic engagement in West Africa, reinforcing Kenya’s leadership role in advancing African unity and regional integration.
