Tanzanian police have imposed a nationwide curfew starting at 6 pm East Africa Time (EAT) following widespread protests against President Samia Suluhu’s administration.

The curfew was announced after a tense polling day marred by demonstrations, chaos, and clashes in several parts of the country. Security officials said the measure aims to restore calm amid reports of continuing unrest.

Authorities also confirmed that internet access has been disrupted across most regions, with citizens reporting difficulties using WhatsApp, X, and Facebook.

Opposition supporters took to the streets to denounce what they called a “one-sided election” marked by intimidation, censorship, and political bias.

Security has been heightened in key cities,  including Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Mwanza, following reports of violent confrontations between protesters and police. Tear gas and water cannons were reportedly deployed to disperse crowds in the commercial capital.

“Tanzania has instituted a nationwide curfew commencing at 6 p.m. East Africa Time. Demonstrators are warned to comply with police orders,” read a statement from the national police command. However, protest leaders vowed to press on with demonstrations despite government warnings.

Eyewitnesses reported a heavy deployment of police and military vehicles in major cities as authorities moved to enforce the curfew.

Human rights groups have expressed concern over potential violations during the crackdown and urged the government to uphold citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly and free expression.

The developments come days after the U.S. Embassy in Tanzania issued a security alert advising its citizens to remain indoors and avoid large gatherings due to escalating tensions and protests.
