Speaking during a Senate Plenary session on Wednesday, Murkomen said police findings indicate that the lawyer was also burdened by debts owed to shylocks, some of which were linked to the fraudulent schemes.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has revealed that preliminary investigations show murdered lawyer Kyalo Mbobu was ensnared in fraudulent gold dealings and fake German antique transactions before his death.

Speaking during a Senate Plenary session on Wednesday, Murkomen said police findings indicate that the lawyer was also burdened by debts owed to shylocks, some of which were linked to the fraudulent schemes.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the deceased was entangled in several debts owed to shylocks, some of which were connected to fraudulent transactions. Specifically, he was lured into dubious gold scams and alleged German antique dealings, which turned out to be fraudulent,” Murkomen told senators.

The question on the progress of investigations into Mbobu’s murder was raised by nominated Senator Hamida Kibwana of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Kyalo was shot dead on September 9, 2025. Police reports show he was driving his grey Toyota Land Cruiser, registration number KCA 177W, along Magadi Road when he was ambushed by two assailants on a motorcycle near Brookhouse International School.

One of the attackers, armed with a pistol, fired eight bullets at the lawyer before fleeing towards Galleria Mall.

The incident was recorded at Lang’ata Police Station under OB No. 29/09/09/2025. The Directorate of Homicide took over the case on September 11.

“The scene was processed and four spent cartridges recovered. The deceased's vehicle was towed to the Homicide Investigation Bureau yard for documentation,” Murkomen said.

The CS added that detectives have questioned several witnesses, including employees at Mbobu’s law firm, and reviewed CCTV footage from Sagret Hotel, Town House, where his offices are located and Brookhouse International School.

The footage is being analysed to track the killers and piece together the lawyer’s final movements.

Murkomen assured lawmakers that the investigation remains active, with police pursuing multiple leads in an effort to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those behind the murder.

No arrests have been made so far.

Mbobu’s killing sparked outrage within the legal fraternity, with colleagues demanding swift justice and stronger protection for lawyers handling sensitive or high-risk cases.
