The Cabinet has approved the dualling of the 23.5-kilometre Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi road, a major infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving mobility between Nairobi and Kiambu counties.
The project, which will expand the existing two-lane highway into a dual carriageway, is part of the government’s broader plan to modernise the Nairobi Metropolitan transport network.
Once complete, the upgraded road is expected to significantly reduce travel times for thousands of commuters who use the corridor daily.
According to a Cabinet brief, the project will feature bypasses, loops, and access roads to improve capacity and traffic flow.
It will also include non-motorised transport (NMT) lanes and commuter facilities to enhance road safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.
“The expansion of the Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi road will ease chronic congestion and enhance connectivity between key economic and residential zones in Nairobi and Kiambu,” the Cabinet statement said.
The road serves some of the capital’s fastest-growing neighbourhoods, including Muthaiga, Runda, Ridgeways, and Kiambu Town, which have long struggled with gridlock during peak hours.
The government noted that the congestion not only causes economic losses through wasted time and fuel but also contributes to air pollution and commuter fatigue.
The dualling project aligns with Kenya Vision 2030, which prioritises efficient infrastructure as a driver of economic growth, and supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on resilient, inclusive, and sustainable mobility systems.
Officials said the project is also designed to complement ongoing transport upgrades across the Nairobi Metropolitan Area, including the expansion of major arterial roads and the development of commuter rail and bus rapid transit (BRT) systems.
The Cabinet emphasised that the new road design incorporates sustainability features, including improved drainage systems, road signage, and landscaping to reduce environmental impact and promote safer, cleaner transport.
“The dualling will not only decongest the corridor but also enhance road safety, improve travel reliability, and support economic activity between Nairobi and its satellite towns,” the statement added.
The project is expected to spur development along the corridor, unlocking investment opportunities in real estate, commerce, and industry while creating jobs during construction and operation phases.
The Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi expansion is one of several strategic road projects under the government’s infrastructure modernisation programme, which seeks to improve connectivity, reduce logistics costs, and boost competitiveness across the country’s key economic zones.
