The court heard on Tuesday that the killers of Wells Fargo HR Director Willis Ayieko withdrew Sh145,000 from his account using his national ID. The testimony, part of the prosecution’s case, focused on the M-Pesa transactions that took place shortly after Ayieko went missing in October 2024.
Anthony Gitonga, an M-Pesa shop attendant, told the court that a man in a blue jacket and spectacles came to his shop on the morning of October 19, 2024, presenting an ID card bearing Ayieko’s name.
The man made two withdrawals, taking Sh45,000 during the first transaction and Sh30,000 shortly after.
“Alikuja 6am na alikuwa na ID ya Willis. Akatoa pesa Sh45,000, then akarudi akatoa Sh30,000, na alikuwa na miwani,” Gitonga recounted.
Gitonga said the following day the same man returned and withdrew additional funds, although he was served by a colleague.
“Alirudi next day akatoa pesa zingine ndiyo total ikafika Sh145,000, lakini siku ya pili mimi sikuwa,” he said.
CCTV footage played in court showed the man receiving the cash before leaving the shop, a key piece of evidence linking the withdrawals to the suspects standing trial.
Gitonga explained that while he believes the person could be one of the three accused, he could not be certain because the man wore spectacles, which none of the suspects are known to wear.
“Huyo customer alikuwa na miwani, na wale washukiwa watatu hawana miwani, so ni vigumu mimi kuwatambua,” he said.
Ayieko disappeared on October 18, 2024, and his car was later found abandoned in Sabatia. Six days later, his body was discovered in a stream along the Siaya-Kakamega border. The next hearing is scheduled for February 23, 2026.
