Nairobi police are investigating the murder of Anthony Otieno, a boda boda rider and online delivery agent, whose body was discovered in a short-stay rental apartment in South B.
The victim was reportedly delivering a phone when he went missing, raising alarm among family and authorities.
Otieno’s family said he had been in touch with them shortly before leaving for the delivery but could not be reached afterward.
"He came around 9 a.m. and left with the package at about 10:30 a.m. By noon, we could not reach him," said his brother, Isaiah Ochieng.
His wife, Eunice Atieno, described similar events. "The last time I called him was around 10:30 a.m. He told me he had just arrived at the client's house and would call me later. After that, I don’t know what happened."
The delivery involved an iPhone ordered via WhatsApp by a client in Eldoret, intended for a relative in South B. Attempts by the family to contact the client failed.
Otieno’s body was found around 3 p.m. by the apartment owner in a fourth-floor unit. He was discovered under the bed with his hands and feet tied, and blood visible under the bedroom door.
Ochieng said an autopsy showed that his brother died from a blow to the head caused by a blunt object. He added that Otieno appeared to have been restrained and gagged.
Police reported that the phone Otieno was delivering was recovered at the scene, along with a knife and a metal rod believed to have been used in the attack.
Authorities note that the case resembles earlier murders linked to short-stay apartments in Nairobi. In January 2024, socialite Wahu was found dead in South B; John Matara, seen on CCTV entering the building with her, was later arrested. Ten days later, the dismembered body of 20-year-old university student Rita Waeni was discovered in a Roysambu rental unit. Her case remains under investigation.
