GSU officer found dead at Mandera camp as police confirm suicide
In Summary

The officer, identified as Constable Nicholas Omwega, was attached to the GSU Duce Camp in Kutulo. The incident took place on Thursday, January 29, 2026, while he was at the camp.

Shock and grief gripped a security camp in Mandera County after a General Service Unit officer was found dead in an incident police have confirmed as a suicide.

The officer, identified as Constable Nicholas Omwega, was attached to the GSU Duce Camp in Kutulo. The incident took place on Thursday, January 29, 2026, while he was at the camp.

Police said officers at the camp were alerted after hearing a gunshot. They moved to the location and found Constable Omwega dead. His service rifle was recovered at the scene. Authorities did not provide further details on how the incident unfolded.

Officials said investigations are ongoing, but the reason behind the suicide remains unknown. Fellow officers said the constable had not raised concern and did not show signs that suggested he was struggling.

The officer’s body was taken to a mortuary within the area as arrangements were made for it to be flown to Nairobi.

The death has once again drawn attention to suicide cases within the police service, which authorities say are on the rise. Police leaders have previously warned that dozens of officers die by suicide each year.

According to officials, the nature of police work exposes officers to stress and trauma as they respond to dangerous and demanding situations while enforcing the law. Over time, this pressure has been linked to increased deaths among service members.

To deal with the challenge, police authorities have rolled out counselling services for officers. The National Police Service Commission has also formed a special unit focused on officer welfare.

The unit is tasked with assessing needs, running outreach programs, and helping prevent mental health challenges and substance abuse within the police force.
