The fight against mobile phone theft in Kenya has intensified as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) continues to target individuals suspected of handling stolen devices. Recent operations have focused on dismantling organized networks that traffic stolen phones both locally and across borders.

In California, Kamukunji Sub-County, detectives moved in on a suspect identified through forensic intelligence. Two of his alleged collaborators had already been taken into custody last week, during which authorities recovered a significant number of stolen phones, some reportedly being moved to Uganda.

During the raid, the main suspect managed to escape on a motorbike after detecting the detectives’ approach. In the scramble, he dropped a black carrier bag containing three yellow cellotape-wrapped parcels. When opened, the packages were found to contain 62 assorted stolen mobile phones, underscoring the scale of the illicit operation.

The recovered devices have been secured as evidence, while investigators continue to track the fleeing suspect and his remaining accomplices. The DCI emphasized that the operation forms part of a broader, intelligence-driven campaign to dismantle syndicates involved in mobile phone theft.

“Through sustained, intelligence-led operations, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains unwavering in its commitment to dismantle mobile phone theft syndicates by targeting not only the thieves but also the receivers who fuel this criminal enterprise,” the agency said.

The crackdown aims to curb networks profiting from stolen phones and reduce theft incidents nationwide. Members of the public are encouraged to provide tips via the DCI toll-free line at 0800 722 203 or through WhatsApp at 0709 570 000. “Usiogope!” the agency urged, stressing that citizens can come forward safely.

This operation follows a major January 26 raid in Nairobi’s Central Business District, where more than 900 suspected stolen mobile phones were recovered. Two suspects were arrested in intelligence-led interventions along Charles Rubia Street, a known hub for parcels traveling to other counties and neighboring nations.

“Upon opening the packages, the officers were greeted by a shocking sight: an assortment of stolen mobile phones, numbering approximately 900,” the DCI said. Investigations indicate the suspects are part of a well-organized syndicate targeting the public and mobile phone retailers across Nairobi, highlighting the importance of continued intelligence-led interventions.
