The fifth edition of the annual Bethany Kids ' Great Wheel' event commenced on Wednesday at the AIC Kijabe Hospital in Kiambu County and is destined for Bukhungu Stadium on 1st March 2026 in Kakamega County.
Speaking exclusively to Radio Generation on Thursday evening while at Suswa, headed to Narok, seven-time Standard Chartered Marathon Wheelchair 21 Km race winner Carol Wanjira expressed her excitement in taking part in the 11-day event scheduled for February 18 - March 1, 2026, emphasizing the need for awareness and advocacy for wheelchair users, especially among children.
"This powerful initiative aims to create awareness, advocate for appropriate wheelchairs, champion mobility and independence for persons living with disabilities," said Wanjira, a multi-talented para sport athlete who is also a national team player for the Kenya wheelchair basketball team.
"This great initiative is part of an annual wheel drive by Bethany Kids Kenya, where we traverse different towns, counties, and cities in more than 400 kms to end disability stigma, and champion rights for persons with disabilities across various communities," she added
"The Great Wheel journey kicked off yesterday, February 18, and will culminate on March 1, 2026, as we mark Wheelchair Day," Wanjira concluded.
The Bethany Kids initiative's main purpose is to serve children with surgical conditions and disabilities and the Great Wheel event now offers a chance to spotlight the significant need for appropriate wheelchairs, to end disability stigma, and to champion the rights of people with disabilities.
The gruelling journey across different counties is a call to provide children and people with disabilities the gift of independence and mobility, an invitation to donate to a meaningful cause, and a call to serve.
The noble cause targets to raise funds for children born with surgical conditions or special needs that require mobility aids.
