Police officers in Port Victoria, Busia County, on Sunday, arrested two suspects and recovered a stolen bull following a timely public tip-off.
The operation, conducted by officers from Port Victoria Police Station, led to the tracking of the animal to Nyadorera Market.
The suspects were taken into custody and are currently being processed at Port Victoria Police Station, awaiting arraignment in court once investigations are finalized.
According to police statement, the arrests were made shortly after a livestock owner reported his bull missing on October 30, 2025.
The officers immediately launched investigations, working closely with residents to trace the movement of the animal believed to have been stolen from the Port Victoria area.
“They arrested two suspects who were found with the animal,” the statement read, adding that the recovery was made possible through “timely intelligence and cooperation from members of the public.”
The NPS commended the community for their collaboration, noting that such partnerships between the police and citizens are vital in curbing livestock theft, a common issue in many parts of western Kenya.
“The Service applauds members of the public for their timely intelligence and cooperation, which led to the successful recovery of the animal and the apprehension of the suspects,” NPS stated.
Livestock theft, has been a recurring problem in border counties such as Busia, often leading to economic losses for farmers and tension within communities.
The latest operation reaffirms the importance of citizen vigilance and rapid police response in addressing rural crime and NPS' continued commitment to combating livestock theft and maintaining law and order at the grassroots level.
While police did not disclose the identities of the suspects, they confirmed that the bull had been safely returned to its rightful owner.
The recovery also highlighted the growing success of community policing initiatives, which encourage locals to report suspicious activities to authorities.
Residents of Port Victoria have since praised the swift response from law enforcement, saying it restored confidence in local policing efforts.
The NPS reiterated its commitment to strengthening collaboration with citizens through information-sharing networks and local policing forums.
The National Police Service affirmed that it will continue to act promptly on credible intelligence and sustain its operations to deter criminal activity across the country.
The two suspects are expected to appear before a Busia court in the coming days to face charges related to stock theft, a criminal offence under Kenya’s Penal Code.
The operation serves as yet another reminder of the power of public cooperation in enhancing community safety, with police emphasizing that “security begins with every citizen.”
