In Summary

Speaking during a consultative meeting with the newly elected leadership of the Kenya Parliamentary Journalists Association (KPJA), Wetang’ula emphasised that the media is a key stakeholder in supporting Parliament’s roles of legislation, oversight and representation.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on journalists covering parliamentary proceedings to uphold accuracy, authenticity and professionalism in their reporting, saying the media plays a crucial role in advancing the legislature’s mandate.

Speaking during a consultative meeting with the newly elected leadership of the Kenya Parliamentary Journalists Association (KPJA), Wetang’ula emphasised that the media is a key stakeholder in supporting Parliament’s roles of legislation, oversight and representation.

“As Patron of the KPJA, I value the media’s role in informing and educating the public on parliamentary matters. I urge journalists to remain factual, authentic and professional in their reporting,” he said.

Wetang’ula encouraged journalists to invest in thorough reading and research to ensure accurate coverage of parliamentary proceedings.

He dismissed the notion of hostility between Parliament and the media, noting that the institution recognises the Fourth Estate as a partner in promoting transparency and public awareness.

“Parliament is not adversarial to the media. We recognise your vital role in disseminating information to the public,” he said.

The Speaker assured the association of Parliament’s commitment to improving working conditions for journalists.

He announced plans to construct a modern, fully equipped media centre, facilitate training programmes, and expand opportunities for collaboration.

Wetang’ula said these engagements would continue during the upcoming KPJA retreat in Mombasa, aimed at strengthening relations between Parliament and the press.

The meeting was attended by Clerk of the National Assembly Samuel Njoroge, Director in the Speaker’s Office Stephen Apopo and Chief of Staff Benson Milimo.

The newly elected KPJA leadership present included Chairman Moses Ogada, Vice President Irene Mwangi, Treasurer Elizabeth Mutuku, Secretary General Edwin Obuya, Deputy Secretary General Collins Omulo, Organising Secretary Emmanuel To,o and Liaison Officer Josphat Thiongo.

Wetang’ula reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the media’s work in covering parliamentary affairs, saying a robust and responsible press is vital for public trust in democratic institutions.
