Kenya is set to experience varied weather conditions over the next five days, with several regions expected to receive rainfall even as others remain sunny and dry, according to a weekend advisory issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department on Friday, December 5.
In the outlook covering December 6 to December 9, the department noted that most parts of the country would remain largely sunny, but counties within the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Northeastern and South-eastern lowlands would experience moderate to heavy rainfall.
In the Highlands East, counties expected to receive afternoon rains after cloudy mornings include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi. The weather pattern in these areas is expected to begin with light showers before giving way to sunny intervals later in the day.
Similar conditions were forecasted across the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley region, where rain is expected in Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii and Nyamira.
Other counties projected to experience the same weather pattern include Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
The advisory also indicated that Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, as well as inland parts of Tana River County, would receive light showers from Sunday, December 7, to Tuesday, December 9.
These areas are expected to remain mostly cloudy during the rest of the forecast period.
Meanwhile, the coastal strip, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, was projected to remain sunny and dry throughout the five days.
In its temperature alert, Kenya Met cautioned residents in Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi to prepare for very cold nights. The advisory indicated that night temperatures in these counties could fall to as low as 05°C during the forecast period.
At the same time, the department noted that extremely high daytime temperatures would be experienced in the North-western region and parts of the Coast. Daytime temperatures are expected to rise to about 37°C in Northern Kenya and 33°C along the coastal counties.
