The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has cautioned members of the public against falling victim to an online scam aimed at defrauding unsuspecting Kenyans.
In a statement on Sunday, shared on its official platforms, the authority said fraudsters are creating fake websites to collect alleged traffic fines.
“Fraudsters are exploiting the following domains in their schemes…” NTSA said, before listing several websites it claims are being used to scam the public.
The listed domains include: ntsca.cc/#/, jezbo.com/ke, balifm.com/ke, ntsago.cc/ke, nfhgdq.com/ke, ntsago.top/ke, ntsago.blog/ke and ntsago.help/ke.
NTSA urged Kenyans to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious links or websites. The authority also reiterated that it communicates only through its official website, verified social media channels and an SMS line.
“NTSA has no official accounts on Instagram or TikTok. NTSA communicates only through the listed official channels...,” the statement read.
The warning comes amid reports of Kenyans receiving suspicious text messages prompting them to pay fines for alleged traffic offences. The messages direct recipients to fake websites designed to mimic the official NTSA portal.
The counterfeit sites closely resemble the genuine NTSA website, www.ntsa.go.ke, in an attempt to deceive users.
“NTSA: Please settle your vehicle traffic violation bills before December 20th. Late payments will incur heavier penalties,” reads one of the scam messages reported by members of the public.
Online users on X expressed the concern that the fake messages could actually have a desired effect by the alleged scammers.
“If these scammers found a way to make the text appear to come from NTSA, they’d scam a lot of people,” another user lamented.
The Authority called on Kenyans to disregard and report any other accounts or websites pretending to represent NTSA.
