ODM Deputy Party Leader and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir has affirmed that the Coast region remains united and focused as leaders begin internal consultations to determine their political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during the Coastal Salute event held in Kikambala, Kilifi County, in honour of late former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, Nassir said the region was engaging in sober and inclusive discussions guided by collective interests.
He stressed that Coast leaders were determined to move forward as one bloc.
“The Coast region remains united, focused, and firmly committed to collective consultation as it charts its political path toward 2027,” Nassir said, adding that the region was speaking with one voice despite the ongoing political realignments at the national level.
He expressed appreciation to Coast leaders for maintaining cohesion and maturity, singling out Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Ali Joho for his role in anchoring unity across the region.
Nassir described Joho as “a son of the Coast” whose leadership had provided stability during what he termed a critical moment of reflection and transition.
“As a region, we are consulting within ourselves on our political direction going into 2027,” he said.
“These discussions are being undertaken soberly, respectfully, and with the interests of the people of the Coast at heart.”
The ODM deputy party leader reiterated that his political position remains within the broad-based government framework that was championed by the late ODM leader Raila Odinga.
He said that framework continues to define the political space where ODM supporters and partners were left.
“My stand remains within the broad-based government framework established under the leadership of the late Raila Odinga,” Nassir told the gathering, noting that this approach provided a foundation for inclusive governance and national stability.
He cautioned that as consultations continue, the region must take a pragmatic approach to future political engagements, ensuring that any alliances or partnerships are grounded in shared values and the core ideals of the Orange Democratic Movement.
Nassir emphasized that respect for devolution, open and transparent governance, and listening to the voice of citizens must remain central to ODM’s political engagements.
“We must work with those who align with our principles and who believe in strengthening devolution, upholding accountability, and governing in a way that places citizens at the center of decision-making,” he said.
The Mombasa governor noted that devolution remains a key pillar for the Coast region, arguing that strong county governments are essential for addressing historical marginalization and accelerating development.
He further assured Coast residents that unity remains the region’s greatest asset and that leaders would continue to engage in consultations that safeguard stability, development, and the long-term interests of the people.
“Unity is our greatest strength as a region,” Nassir said. “We will continue to consult and engage in a way that protects stability and ensures sustainable development for the Coast.”
The remarks come amid heightened political activity across the country as parties and regional leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 polls, with the Coast region emerging as a key political battleground.
