The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has appealed for community and stakeholder support to protect teachers across the country following the killing of teacher Stephen Vundi Musili in Garissa County.
In a statement issued on January 27, 2026, the Commission said the safety and security of teachers nationwide is now being addressed through a multi-agency government framework involving key institutions, including security agencies.
“The issue of the security and safety of teachers not just in Garissa County but the entire country is now being handled within the framework of a multi-agency team comprising key government institutions, including the security agencies,” the Commission said.
TSC said the approach is aimed at safeguarding teachers and ensuring uninterrupted teaching and learning in schools across Kenya.
The Commission urged host communities, religious organisations, and other stakeholders to actively support teachers who continue to serve in different parts of the country.
“The Commission is calling upon all stakeholders, host communities, religious groups, and the entirety of our society to support our teachers who are spread all over the country,” the statement read.
As part of its response, TSC said it has deployed a team of senior officers to Garissa County to engage affected teachers and assess the security situation on the ground.
“Working closely with the security agencies, the Commission has sent a team of senior officers to Garissa County to engage the teachers and assess the situation on the ground,” it said, adding that the team will provide necessary support.
The Commission reiterated its condemnation of the killing, terming it a serious violation of the right to education and security for both teachers and learners.
“This heinous and cowardly act has not only robbed a young teacher of his dear life but also undermines the right to education, peace, and security for teachers and learners alike,” TSC said.
Teachers across the country were urged to remain calm as the matter receives urgent attention from the Commission and other government agencies.
TSC also conveyed condolences to the family of the deceased, his colleagues, and learners, saying the Commission stands with the teaching fraternity during the period of mourning.
The statement was signed by TSC Chairperson Dr Jamleck Muturi John.
