A fire on Sunday, February 8, 2026, razed several iron-sheet business structures in Biashara Ward, Ruiru, causing significant losses to traders.
The blaze occurred near the municipal offices and the Ruiru Chief’s offices. Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion shortly before the fire.
Videos seen by Radio Generation showed burnt-out iron structures with smoke filling the air as residents crowded the scene to watch.
No injuries or fatalities were reported, and the value of the destroyed property had not been established at the time of reporting. Emergency responders were not immediately visible at the scene.
Biashara Ward MCA Kimani Nduta suggested the fire could have been deliberate.
“We’ve been here since 2 am. This fire tragedy was unfortunately planned,” Nduta said.
According to the MCA, a planned public participation forum had been organised to engage business owners on how they could safely vacate the area.
"We were to have a public participation meeting to see how people may vacate here and whether they may be compensated after they leave," Nduta said.
"We were really waiting for the meeting, but instead of a meeting we woke up to a fire, so I'm wondering what kind of coincidence is this? I have so many questions."
