In Summary

In Embobut, Marakwet East, a local resident handed over a loaded AK-47 rifle containing three rounds of ammunition to the nearby police station on Thursday. The surrender is part of ongoing disarmament efforts aimed at reducing the presence of illegal firearms in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The National Police Service has successfully recovered illegal and stolen firearms in Elgeyo Marakwet and Kiambu counties, underscoring the crucial role of community cooperation in maintaining safety.

In a recent development, residents in both regions assisted authorities in securing weapons that could have otherwise fueled criminal activity.

“Since the disarmament exercise began, security agencies in Elgeyo Marakwet County have successfully recovered 312 illegal firearms, 2,205 rounds of ammunition, and one fragmented rifle grenade,” the National Police Service said. The Service expressed gratitude to residents for their cooperation, stressing that joint efforts are essential for building safer communities.

In Kiambu County, a different scenario unfolded in Magana, Thika East Sub-County, where members of the public fatally injured an armed individual. Officers from Munyu Police Station arrived swiftly after being alerted by the local administration.

At the scene, police recovered a G3 rifle, two magazines, 68 rounds of 7.62x51mm ammunition, additional blank rounds, a penknife, and other related items. Preliminary investigations indicate the firearm may be linked to a prior case involving a stolen police weapon within the Sub-County.

The NPS cautioned the public against mob justice, emphasizing that such acts are illegal and disrupt ongoing security efforts. “The National Police Service appeals to members of the public to refrain from acts of mob injustice and instead report suspected criminal activities to law enforcement authorities for appropriate and lawful action,” the Service stated.

These incidents follow earlier disarmament operations in Elgeyo Marakwet, where in September 2025, 232 illegal guns and 1,595 rounds of ammunition were handed over.

Residents from multiple sub-locations, including Ketut, Chemwonyo, Kibaimwa, Mon, Chesuman, Kaben, and Endo, worked with peace committees to surrender their weapons.

In Kiambu, the security challenges included stolen firearms rather than voluntary surrender. On October 29, 2025, two rifles, an AK-47 and a G3, along with ammunition, were taken from the Maguguni Patrol Base armoury in Thika East.

The National Police Service continues to strengthen security by removing illegal firearms from circulation. Members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious activities through toll-free lines 999, 911, and 112, or anonymously via #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp 0709 570 000.

The recovery of these firearms highlights the impact of community involvement in law enforcement. By surrendering illegal weapons and reporting crimes, residents directly support efforts to prevent violence and uphold justice.

Through these combined efforts in counties such as Elgeyo Marakwet and Kiambu, the National Police Service is making measurable progress in ensuring public safety.

As disarmament campaigns and investigations continue, the NPS reiterated the need for public cooperation to ensure that firearms are removed from circulation and that legal processes are followed. These steps reflect the Service’s dedication to creating a secure environment for all citizens.
