The United Democratic Alliance has announced a repeat of its party elections in polling stations where previous voting either did not take place or had very low turnout, in a bid to correct irregularities and boost member confidence.
The party’s National Executive Committee made the decision during a recent meeting and has tasked the National Election Board with executing the exercise promptly.
In a statement shared on X on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, UDA said the repeat elections must be held within 30 days, covering all centres affected by the previous shortcomings.
The party noted that some members had raised concerns over being excluded or inadequately involved in the initial voting, prompting the NEC to intervene.
The directive applies to numerous regions nationwide and is part of the party’s effort to ensure its grassroots process is transparent and inclusive. UDA said the repeat polls will provide a fair chance for all members to participate fully in choosing their local leadership.
“The NEC further directed the NEB to: Organise and conduct repeat elections within 30 days, effective today, in all polling centres where either election did not take place, or there was no adequate participation of party members in the election,” the statement reads.
After the repeat polls, the party plans to conduct elections at the ward level to complete the grassroots cycle. The NEC emphasised that this next phase can only proceed once the disputed centres have been addressed.
“Organise and conduct ward-level party elections across the country within 30 days upon the conclusion of the repeat elections specified in the foregoing paragraph,” the statement reads.
The NEC also highlighted the importance of proper planning and awareness campaigns to ensure all members are informed and aspirants are properly registered. UDA has directed that a clear schedule be developed to guide these preparations.
“Develop a calendar for sensitisation of members and registration of aspirants for various seats available in the repeat elections and the ward elections,” the statement reads.
In addition, the party approved reforms to its grassroots leadership structure to strengthen democracy at the local level. A new Ward Executive Committee, composed of seven members, will now be elected by the Ward Congress, which includes officials from all polling stations.
“The NEC approved the proposal for the establishment of the Ward Executive Committee comprising (7) members who shall be elected by the Ward Congress, an electoral college comprising all the officials of the Polling Stations,” UDA’s statement reads.
The party also urged its dispute resolution body to accelerate the handling of pending cases from the earlier elections to maintain order and credibility.
“The NEC further directed the ENDRC to conclude the resolution of any disputes that may have been filed in accordance with the procedures established in the party constitution.”
UDA said the measures are meant to strengthen inclusivity, transparency, and accountability as it prepares for upcoming political contests locally and nationally.
