Football Kenya Federation has confirmed results for two abandoned SportPesa League matches, upholding a 1–1 draw and awarding a 2–0 win, while referring misconduct issues to disciplinary bodies.

Football Kenya Federation has upheld a 1–1 draw between Nairobi United and Gor Mahia, while awarding Murang’a Seal a 2–0 win over Ulinzi Stars after an abandoned fixture. FKF says both cases were handled in accordance with the FKF rules and regulations.

In a statement released on Friday, the FKF said the Leagues and Competitions Committee “has issued its rulings on two abandoned SportPesa League fixtures involving Nairobi United FC vs Gor Mahia FC and Ulinzi Stars FC vs Murang’a Seal FC.”

The decisions address both the outcomes of the matches and the next steps regarding misconduct and possible sanctions.

The first ruling concerned the Nairobi United FC versus Gor Mahia FC match, listed as Match No. 132.

According to the Committee, the fixture was abandoned due to circumstances beyond the control of the teams. “The Committee ruled that the match was abandoned due to force majeure,” the statement said.

As a result, and in line with competition rules, the Committee upheld the scoreline at the time play was halted.

“In accordance with the FKF Rules and Regulations, the result at the time of abandonment has been upheld as a 1–1 draw,” FKF said.

This decision confirms that both Nairobi United FC and Gor Mahia FC will each retain one point from the fixture.

However, the ruling did not bring the matter to a complete close. The Committee noted that issues arising from the disruption itself would be addressed separately.

“Matters relating to misconduct during the match have been referred to the FKF Disciplinary Committee for further action where applicable,” the statement added, signalling that sanctions could still follow depending on the findings.

The second ruling involved Match No. 162 between Ulinzi Stars FC and Murang’a SEAL FC, another fixture abandoned before completion.

In this case, the Committee reached a different conclusion after examining the circumstances that led to the stoppage.

“The Committee determined that the match was abandoned following Ulinzi Stars FC’s refusal to resume play,” FKF said.

Under the governing regulations, such a refusal carries consequences for the team deemed responsible for the abandonment.

“As per the FKF rules and regulations, the match has been awarded to Murang’a SEAL FC, with the official result recorded as Ulinzi Stars FC 0–2 Murang’a SEAL FC,” the statement said.

The decision hands Murang’a SEAL FC all three points, a significant outcome in a tightly contested league season.

FKF further indicated that the ramifications of the abandoned match extend beyond the scoreline.

“The case has been forwarded to the FKF Disciplinary Committee and the Referees Committee for further consideration of applicable sanctions,” it said. This suggests that both team conduct and officiating may come under review.

The rulings reaffirm the federation’s emphasis on adherence to established procedures when matches are disrupted.

By citing “force majeure” in one case and “refusal to resume play” in the other, the Committee highlighted the different thresholds used to determine responsibility and outcomes under the FKF rules and regulations.

Abandoned matches have increasingly become a point of contention in Kenyan football, often sparking debate among clubs, supporters, and officials.

FKF’s latest decisions aim to provide certainty while reinforcing the framework that governs league competitions.

While the immediate results have now been confirmed, attention is likely to shift to the disciplinary process.

With both cases referred for further action, FKF’s Disciplinary Committee and Referees Committee are expected to examine conduct during the matches and determine whether sanctions are warranted.

For now, the federation says the Leagues and Competitions Committee has concluded its deliberations on the two fixtures, marking an important step in restoring order to the SportPesa League calendar as the season continues.
