Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has announced a temporary suspension of academic activities following disruptions caused by ongoing industrial action among staff members.
The decision comes after a special Senate meeting held on Thursday, 30th October 2025, aimed at addressing the challenges affecting normal university operations.
In a notice issued to all students, the university directed that academic programmes be paused with immediate effect, and all students are expected to vacate the campus by 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, 2nd November 2025.
The temporary halt, however, does not affect certain groups of students, including medical students on clinical rotations, TVET Institute students, Mombasa and Nakuru campus students, SODeL students, JKUAT/KESRA students, and postgraduate students involved in ongoing research.
Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Robert Kinyua, PhD, said, “The university management regrets any inconvenience this may cause and appreciates your understanding and cooperation during this period.” He added that further updates on the resumption of academic activities would be communicated through official university channels.
The pause comes amid actions by members of the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU), whose demands have disrupted normal academic schedules.
The university emphasized that the suspension is a temporary measure and urged students to comply with the directives to ensure safety and order during this period.
Students and staff affected by the decision have expressed mixed reactions, with some highlighting concerns about disrupted academic progress while others acknowledge the necessity of following administrative guidance.
The university management has assured the campus community that steps will be taken to resume learning once conditions stabilize.
