Police in Kisii Central Sub-County on Wednesday seized 2,000 litres of Kangara and 40 litres of Chang’aa in a renewed crackdown on illicit alcohol production in Kiogoro, Kisii County.
The raid, carried out early in the morning at Riangombenene Village, was led by officers from the Kiogoro Police Station after intelligence pointed to an active brewing operation in the area.
According to the police, the officers stormed a homestead where they found large containers filled with Kangara—the fermented base used to distill Chang’aa—along with several litres of the illicit brew ready for sale.
A woman who was found at the premises was arrested and taken to Kiogoro Police Station. Police say she will be processed and charged in court once investigations are complete.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, the National Police Service said the operation is part of ongoing efforts to curb the production and sale of harmful, unregulated alcohol in the region.
“The National Police Service reiterates its commitment to safeguarding communities from harmful substances and to dismantling the networks involved in the production of unlawful alcohol,” the statement read in part.
Officers noted that similar operations have been conducted across the sub-county in recent weeks, with more expected as authorities move to tackle the growing problem. They added that the crackdown is aimed at reducing both health risks and insecurity linked to illicit alcohol.
Residents have been encouraged to assist law enforcement by sharing information that could help identify illegal brewers. Members of the public can report suspicious activity by calling the toll-free numbers 999, 911, or 112, while anonymous tips can also be submitted through #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203 or via WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.
Police say community cooperation will be key in ensuring those behind the illegal trade are held accountable and dangerous brews are kept off the streets.
The latest seizure builds on previous police efforts to curb illicit alcohol production and dismantle illegal brewing operations nationwide.
