Defending champions Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) edged neighbours Maseno University in a thrilling women’s rugby sevens clash at the ongoing Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) play-offs at the Kabarak University Grounds in Nakuru County.
Former champions Maseno University also started on a high note with an intention of reclaiming their lost glory.
Speaking on Friday evening after the event, Maseno coach Vincent Odhiambo said that they are proud to have started the championships well, even as they plan for the East Africa Games next month.
“We came here well prepared for victory, and that is why we had to start on a good note. Ours is to secure a big victory not just for the school but for the country as a whole. Our aim is to use this title to motivate the students," he said.
The Maseno vs MMUST showdown had star girl Mary Nasimiyu scoring the decisive try as MMUST stunned Maseno 12-10 in a tightly contested encounter of the women's rugby 7s category.
The men's category saw hosts Kabarak University making full use of home advantage, thrashing Kabianga University 19-0 in their opening match of day two.
Former champions Maseno University were equally dominant, hammering Lukenya University 43-0.
The other rugby results saw Chuka University narrowly beating Maasai Mara University 12-7 in another closely fought match.
