KUSF Secretary General Joan Adalo told Radio Generation on Saturday that she plans to use sports as a key platform to mark and celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8. This idea led to the organization of a women-only championship featuring 16 disciplines.

At least 24 universities have confirmed their participation in the upcoming Kenya Universities Sports Federation (KUSF) Women’s Championships scheduled for March 7–8, 2026, at the Taita Taveta University (TTU) grounds. However, swimming has been excluded because the competition venue does not have a swimming pool.

KUSF Secretary General Joan Adalo told Radio Generation on Saturday that she plans to use sports as a key platform to mark and celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8. This idea led to the organization of a women-only championship featuring 16 disciplines.

“This is a women-only championship held in the spirit of International Women’s Day to celebrate women through sports in all our universities,” said Adalo. She added that swimming will be missing for the first time since the hosts are unable to provide the required facilities.

She noted that institutions that have registered include hosts TTU, KEMU, UON, KU, MKU, Kabarak, Machakos University, Meru University, JKUAT, DeKUT, Zetech, Multimedia University, University of Eldoret, Lukenya University, Tharaka University, Kaimosi Friends University, Maseno University, Kisii University, KCA University, University of Embu, and TUM, among others.

“This year, we have many sports disciplines lined up. At the moment, 21 institutions have already registered to compete. Athletes will compete in 16 disciplines ranging from ball games and indoor sports to martial arts and track and field,” she added.

Adalo confirmed that swimming, which has been part of previous editions, will not feature this year.

Federation President Alfred Kibet Rono said the championship will play a key role in promoting women’s sports in universities.

“Our aim is to support women in sports in our universities. Looking at the entries, we expect tough competition,” said Rono.
