Seventeen young people were arrested in Kasipul Constituency after police intercepted them moving through the area with machetes and other crude weapons, authorities confirmed on Thursday.
The arrests came amid heightened security during the by-election, following reports that the group was using Probox vehicles to intimidate residents.
Rachuonyo South Sub-County Police Commander Philemon Saera said law enforcement acted promptly to prevent any disturbances in the constituency. "Law enforcement agencies are determined to maintain order and ensure a peaceful voting process," he said, stressing the need for calm during the elections.
The group was apprehended near Agoro Sare High School, the designated center for tallying results. Police also seized five vehicles linked to the suspects, which officers said were being used to facilitate their movements across the area.
Homa Bay County Police Commander Lawrence Koilem said inquiries were underway to determine the full extent of the group’s plans. He warned that no disruption of the electoral process would be tolerated.
“We want politicians and their supporters to shun violence and allow the election exercise to go on smoothly. There shouldn’t be any disruptions to the election,” Koilem said. He further urged political actors to cooperate with police and allow security duties to proceed without interference.
Authorities noted that such incidents could create fear among residents and potentially compromise the election.
“The vehicles have been taken to Oyugis Police Station for further inspection. The 17 individuals are also in police custody,” Koilem said.
In addition, police are investigating another incident involving a firearm reportedly snatched from a bodyguard assigned to Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma.
“We have some crucial leads to retrieve the gun. The investigation process is still ongoing,” Koilem added, highlighting ongoing security concerns.
The Kasipul parliamentary by-election has drawn intense competition, with Independent candidate Philip Aroko and ODM’s Boyd Were considered the front runners. Security officers have reiterated that any acts of intimidation, violence, or disruption will be met with strict enforcement to ensure a smooth election.
The arrests underline the role of law enforcement in safeguarding voters and maintaining peace during a politically charged period. Authorities continue to monitor key areas in the constituency, prepared to act swiftly to prevent any incidents that could disrupt the electoral process.
