Kenyan MPs sweep top medals at EAC games

Kenya stamped its authority as the region’s athletics powerhouse after its legislators clinched the highest number of gold medals in the sports at the ongoing East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games (EAC-IPG) in Kampala, Uganda.

Team Kenya delivered a strong performance in athletics at the ongoing East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games (EAC-IPG) in Kampala, Uganda.

The country struck gold in the men’s 4x400m relay, where overall Team Kenya captain and Bunge Sports Club Co-Chairperson Vincent Musyoka of Mwala led David Ochieng (Ugenya), Dan Wanyama (Webuye West), and Bernard Kitur (Nandi Hills) to victory, clocking 50.8 seconds in the race.

Kitur also bagged gold in the men’s 100m with an impressive time of 11.8 seconds at the games held at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Namboole, Uganda.

In the women’s category, Catherine Omanyo (Busia County) secured gold in the 100m race, crossing the finish line in 16.7 seconds.

Courtesy of the lawmakers, Kenya picked up several silver medals, seeing Musyoka finishing second in the men’s 100m in 12.6 seconds. The women’s 4x400m relay team also finished second with a time of 1:26.0.

The women's relay team comprised Irene Kasalu of Kitui County, Florence Jematiah of Baringo County and Betty Maina of Murang'a County, and Kisii County nominated Senator, Esther Okenyuri.

Prof. Phylis Bartoo of Moiben claimed silver in the women’s 1500m, clocking 8:37.8, while Titus Lotee (Kacheliba) took silver in the men’s 1500m with a time of 5:24.0, narrowly behind the winner, Acan Julius of Uganda, who posted 5:23.5.

The country also won several Bronze medals, where Mukunji Gitonga of Manyatta finished third in the men’s 400m in 1:03.9.

In the same race, Joshua Kandie of Baringo Central came in fourth at 1:06.05.

In the men’s 1500m, John Kaguchia of Mukurweini clinched bronze, clocking 5:54.1.

Other strong performances included Esther Okenyuri, who placed fourth in the women’s 100m in 20.1 seconds. Bartoo returned to finish fourth in the women’s 400m in 1:55.1, while Nominated Senator Beth Syengo completed the race in 2:20.3.

In the men’s 1500m, Joshua Kimilu of Kaiti finished in 6:22.7, whereas John Paul Mwirigi of Igembe South finished in 7:35.0, and newly elected Baringo Senator Kipruto Chemitei crossed in 7:49.7.
