Nairobi’s State House Road is set for a major overhaul under a new government infrastructure plan, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has revealed.

The road, which connects the Central Business District to State House and intersects with University Way, will undergo rehabilitation at a cost of Sh1.6 billion, according to a tender notice signed by KURA Director General Silas Kinoti on December 19.

The upgrade is intended to improve traffic movement along this vital route, which serves as a key link to government offices and the Presidential residence.

KURA stated that the State House Road project is part of a larger programme to rehabilitate 93 roads across the country, with a total budget of Sh15.6 billion. Other major roads included in the plan are Mfangano Ring Road, Mathare access roads, Casuarina Road in Kilifi, Kagio-Kanharu-Kathaka Road, and Nakuru town’s East Roads.

Kinoti explained that the contractors awarded the tenders will carry out the works according to government standards and deadlines.

To be eligible, bidders must submit documents including a Certificate of Incorporation, annual practicing license, Tax Compliance certificate, CR 12 form, and a valid Registration Certificate for Access to Government Procurement Opportunities for special projects.

Tender documents must be deposited in the designated boxes at KURA’s Nairobi Regional Offices or Headquarters before Thursday, January 22. All submissions should be enclosed in plain sealed envelopes clearly marked with the tender name and reference number.

President William Ruto has prioritised road upgrades as part of his administration’s infrastructure agenda. During the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium on December 12, the president highlighted plans to build a new Thika Expressway, calling it “a game changer in the transport sector.” The highway will run from the Nairobi Expressway at Museum Hill interchange to Thika town, complementing the existing Thika superhighway.

In addition, the president said that work on the Muthaiga-Kiambu-Ndumberi road will begin in February 2026. Plans for the 175-kilometre Rironi–Mau Summit Highway are also set to start next year, with motorists expected to pay Sh1,400 for the full toll.
