ODM has stepped into its 20th year with a packed programme of activities stretching across the weekend, bringing together supporters and leaders to look back on the party’s long journey. The events began on Friday and continue through Saturday and Sunday at Mama Ngina Waterfront, a venue chosen to capture the spirit of the party’s history.
On its social pages, ODM announced the start of the celebrations with the message, “Lero ni Lero #HonouringTheLegacy ODM at 20,” setting the tone for a weekend of reflection and unity.
The anniversary aims to highlight how the party has grown, the political battles it has taken on, and the space it has carved out in Kenya’s reform efforts. Those attending the celebrations say the milestone brings a chance to think about ODM’s foundation, its mission, and the people who have shaped its identity.
The party has also shared that the moment is meant to acknowledge the challenges and sacrifices made during its two decades of pushing for change.
Friday’s programme opened early with a breakfast hosted by the ODM Disability League from 7 am to 9 am. After that, the women’s and youth wings held separate summits from 10 am to 1 pm, each discussing the direction they hope to take in the coming years. A youth concert then carried the celebrations into the night, running from 6 pm until midnight and drawing a lively crowd.
Much of Friday’s activity also doubled as a tribute to Raila Odinga, the party’s founder, whose role in Kenya’s political transition was recognised throughout the day. Key leaders present included party chairperson Gladys Wanga, Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, Hassan Joho, and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir.
Winnie Odinga, who represents Kenya at the East African Legislative Assembly, also attended the early events.
Saturday, November 15, will feature a major gathering at Mama Ngina Waterfront dedicated to honouring Raila’s long career, his ideals, and the influence he has had over the years. Running from 7:30 am to 2 pm, the event includes a fresh pledge by party members to uphold and defend the democratic progress achieved since ODM’s founding.
In the evening, the party will host a Founders’ Dinner at Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort, bringing together those who played key roles in building the party.
A thanksgiving service led by clerics from different faiths has also been planned to celebrate Raila’s life, leadership and the wider story of ODM. The party says this anniversary comes at a time when it remains active in national dialogue, reform talks, and community-level engagement. President William Ruto is expected to join the celebrations later in the weekend.
