WhatsApp is rolling out two fresh updates aimed at giving users greater control over their chats and profiles, a per-chat storage management tool and a new cover photo feature.
The developments, revealed by reliable WhatsApp tracker WABetaInfo, are available to a limited number of beta testers on Android and iOS devices.
The messaging platform is redesigning how users handle storage by introducing an option that shows how much space each conversation occupies. At present, WhatsApp only displays total data usage, which makes it difficult to identify chats that take up the most space.
With the new update, users will be able to monitor storage per chat or group, delete large files individually, and clear up room on their phones without losing important messages.
The feature is expected to be a game-changer for users in regions like Kenya, where phone storage and data management are major concerns. Small business owners who constantly share media — from photos to videos — will also find it easier to organise their files without wiping out entire conversations.
WABetaInfo reports that WhatsApp is still fine-tuning the tool, and a phased rollout will begin once testing is complete.
In addition to the storage option, WhatsApp is also testing a profile cover photo feature that lets users customise their accounts, similar to the style used on Facebook.
The cover photo will sit above the profile picture, giving users room to express themselves with images, quotes, or scenic backgrounds of their choice.
The feature will first appear on WhatsApp Business accounts before becoming available to all users.
Like other privacy settings on the app, users will have the freedom to choose who can view their cover photos — everyone, only their contacts, or specific people.
Although WhatsApp has not given an exact release date, WABetaInfo says the updates are currently in beta testing, which often means a wider rollout could follow in the coming weeks or months once all improvements are finalised.
