Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has affirmed that Kenya’s economy is on a strong and steady growth trajectory, expanding at an average rate of between four and five percent, despite the global and domestic challenges affecting many economies.

Speaking during an interview on Radio Generation, Mwaura credited the growth to improved performance in key sectors such as agriculture, affordable housing, and diaspora remittances.

He said the government’s strategic interventions under President William Ruto’s administration are yielding phenomenal results across the country.

“The economy continues to grow on average by four or five percent, depending on which quarter you’re looking at,” Mwaura said. “Given the circumstances, it’s absolutely phenomenal what we’ve been able to achieve within such a short period.”

According to Mwaura, the agricultural sector has registered remarkable progress, with coffee, tea, and sugar farmers enjoying better returns for their produce.

He cited the example of coffee farmers in Kiambu, who are now selling their beans at Sh130 per kilo, up from as low as Sh50 or Sh60 in previous years.

“If you look at coffee, tea, and sugar, prices have gone up significantly. For example, in Kiambu, farmers are now getting Sh130 per kilo for coffee, it used to be Sh60 or even Sh50 before. That’s real progress for our farmers,” he added.

According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), Kenya’s economy recorded steady growth in the first half of 2025, with real GDP expanding by 4.9 percent in the first quarter and 5.0 percent in the second quarter.

The Q1 performance was largely supported by strong growth in Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing, which expanded by 6.0 percent.

In Q2, growth was driven by continued resilience in Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing (4.4%), robust performance in Transportation and Storage (5.4%), and notable expansion in Financial and Insurance activities (6.6%). The quarter also witnessed a rebound in Construction and Mining and Quarrying, sectors that had contracted during the same period in 2024, signaling broad-based recovery across key segments of the economy.

Mwaura also pointed to the affordable housing programme as one of the major pillars of the government’s economic transformation agenda.

He revealed that 161,000 housing units are currently in the pipeline, a development he said has already created over 300,000 jobs for Kenyans across the country.

“When it comes to affordable housing, we now have 161,000 houses in the pipeline and have created more than 300,000 jobs. This is tangible progress that is improving livelihoods,” he noted.

The Government Spokesperson further highlighted the growing impact of diaspora remittances, which remain one of the country’s largest sources of foreign exchange.

He said over 452,000 Kenyans working abroad are now remitting more than Sh660 billion annually, supporting not just their families but also fueling local investment.

Mwaura dismissed claims that the economy is struggling, saying that while there are challenges such as pending bills, President Ruto has shown exceptional leadership and a tireless work ethic in steering the country forward.

“The President works extremely hard; he does not sleep. He is always engaging with the people and making sure government programs reach every part of the country. Power, after all, is more relational than positional,” he concluded.

Mwaura maintained that the government’s focus remains on consolidating gains in production, job creation, and infrastructure development as part of Kenya’s long-term plan to build a resilient and inclusive economy.
