A rare encounter between key opposition figures and a senior ODM leader on Friday sparked wide political interest after Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka and Oburu Oginga came together in Machakos during a condolence visit.
The three leaders met at the home of Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu as they joined her family in mourning the loss of her son.
Although the gathering was meant to offer comfort and solidarity, the political weight of those present quickly shifted public attention to the wider meaning of the meeting.
Gachagua and Musyoka are currently spearheading a joint opposition campaign focused on unseating President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
The two have been outspoken in their criticism of the administration and have been moving across regions in a bid to strengthen their support base.
Oburu’s presence at the same event, however, stood out. He is aligned with the broad-based government arrangement and has maintained ODM’s position of backing President Ruto’s re-election bid.
The convergence of leaders drawn from opposing political paths has fuelled speculation, even though the meeting took place in a social setting rather than a formal political forum.
Details of what the three discussed is unknown.
