The development comes two days after 23 of the 31 Members of the County Assembly voted in favor of the impeachment motion, while four abstained, ending weeks of political uncertainty in Nyamira.

The Senate is set to hear the impeachment case against Nyamira County Governor Amos Kimwomi Nyaribo in Plenary on Wednesday, 3rd December, and Thursday, 4th December 2025, after a bid to form a special 11-member investigative committee was withdrawn.

The proposal failed to secure a seconder, clearing the way for the full House to examine the matter directly.

Deputy Speaker Murungi Kathuri informed Senators on Thursday that he had received a communication from the Speaker of the Nyamira County Assembly regarding a resolution seeking Governor Nyaribo’s removal. The notice, delivered on November 27, outlined multiple grounds for impeachment, pointing to alleged violations of the Constitution and abuse of office.

“The motion to establish a special committee failed to get a seconder and has been withdrawn. The Senate shall now investigate the matter in Plenary on Wednesday, 3rd December 2025, and Thursday, 4th December 2025,” Deputy Speaker Kathuri said.

The development comes two days after 23 of the 31 Members of the County Assembly voted in favor of the impeachment motion, while four abstained, ending weeks of political uncertainty in Nyamira.

The motion was filed by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere and sponsored by the Majority Leader, Julious Matwere, citing allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and irregular appointments.

The County Assembly accused Governor Nyaribo of multiple constitutional violations, including approving an allegedly unlawful “Bunge Mashinani,” assenting to the Nyamira County Supplementary Appropriation Bill, 2024 without proper authority, and making unauthorized appointments to key positions.

Among those appointed irregularly were Dr. Peris Nyaboke Oroko as a County Executive Committee Member, members of the Municipal Boards of Nyamira and Keroka, and the County Public Service Board. The Governor is also alleged to have failed to deliver the State of the County Address and annual reports.

Allegations of abuse of office include recruiting staff without budget approval, influencing irregular appointments of senior human resources officials, personal gain from irregular salary arrears, participation in a payroll fraud syndicate, dual appointments beyond the authorized structure, overstepping the powers of the Auditor-General and the County Public Service Board, and unlawfully suspending the Secretary of the CPSB.

By taking the case to Plenary, the Senate underscores its role in ensuring accountability in county governments and upholding transparency in devolved administration. Senators will scrutinize the evidence, debate the claims, and decide on the next steps regarding Governor Nyaribo’s potential removal.

The hearings are expected to draw attention from political watchers and residents alike, offering a full platform to evaluate the charges and guarantee due process in a high-stakes political decision.
