Police stations are fully equipped law enforcement centers led by an Officer Commanding Station (OCS). They handle serious crimes including robbery, homicide, assault, and sexual offences, and usually manage smaller posts nearby.

The Inspector-General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has moved to expand Kenya’s policing network by officially upgrading Kamuguga in Kiambu County to a police station and establishing five additional police posts in strategic regions.

The announcements were made in Kenya Gazette notices published on January 13 and 19, 2026.

Kamuguga Police Station, located at coordinates -1.2122°N and 36.6632°E, now has full police station status under section 40(1) of the National Police Service Act. The upgrade allows it to provide complete law enforcement services and support surrounding communities more effectively.

Meanwhile, five facilities have been recognized as police posts in Nyanza, North Eastern, Rift Valley, and Eastern regions. They include: Otonglo Police Post in Kisumu West, Kisumu County (-0.075722, 34.698351); Mabera Police Post in Kuria West, Migori County (1.18333, 34.45); Lagbogol Police Post in Wajir West, Wajir County (1.288474, 39.82857); Gataka Police Post in Kajiado North, Kajiado County (1.37545, 36.72531); and Thuura Police Post in Imenti East, Meru County (0.05304, 37.71302).

According to the notices, all designations were made using powers granted to the Inspector-General under section 40(1) of the National Police Service Act.

Officials say the recognition of these facilities is intended to make police services more reachable and to improve response to incidents in the counties concerned.

Police stations are fully equipped law enforcement centers led by an Officer Commanding Station (OCS). They handle serious crimes including robbery, homicide, assault, and sexual offences, and usually manage smaller posts nearby.

Stations operate 24/7, with holding cells, vehicles, an armoury, and administrative offices.

Police posts are smaller units overseen by a non-commissioned officer, typically a corporal or sergeant, with fewer staff, usually between five and ten officers. They deal with everyday incidents such as traffic matters, lost property, and minor disputes. Cases that require more extensive investigation are referred to their parent police station.

The new designations aim to bring the police closer to the community, ensuring better presence, faster response times, and improved security across the designated counties.
