Heavy rains force KeNHA to close Migori River bridge
In Summary

The authority did not provide a specific date for reopening, emphasizing that the bridge will only be accessible once water levels are safe for operations.

The Migori River Bridge has been closed to traffic indefinitely due to rising water levels that have made it unsafe for motorists and pedestrians. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced the closure on Saturday, March 7, 2026, warning that the crossing will remain off-limits until conditions improve.

In a statement signed by Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli, KeNHA said the bridge has been rendered hazardous by the fast-rising waters of River Migori, which have surged after recent heavy rains in the area.

The authority did not provide a specific date for reopening, emphasizing that the bridge will only be accessible once water levels are safe for operations.

"The Migori River Bridge has been temporarily closed to traffic starting today, 7th March 2026, until further notice," the advisory read, urging all road users to adjust their travel plans accordingly.

Motorists who regularly depend on the bridge have been advised to use alternative routes. KeNHA recommended the Kiringi Bridge along the Migori–Kehancha Road as the main diversion and called on drivers to follow this guidance to avoid delays and ensure safety.

The authority said teams are actively monitoring water levels and assured the public that repair and restoration works will begin immediately once it is safe for crews to operate.

KeNHA also expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and thanked residents, traders, and commuters for their patience and cooperation during the closure.

The shutdown is expected to disrupt daily travel, trade, and transport in the region, highlighting the challenges posed by extreme weather events on critical infrastructure.
