Uganda Airlines has announced the commencement of operations with a wet-leased Boeing 787 from Ethiopian Airlines, effective March 7, 2026. The move is part of the national carrier’s strategy to maintain consistent long-haul services and strengthen its presence on international routes.
The airline said the short-term lease arrangement is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted service for passengers while supporting its broader goal of reliable network expansion.
"This short-term arrangement ensures operational continuity on the airline's long-haul routes while enhancing network reliability and service delivery for our valued passengers," the airline stated in a public notice.
Under the agreement, Ethiopian Airlines will supply the aircraft along with the necessary crew, maintenance, and insurance, allowing Uganda Airlines to continue intercontinental operations without disruption.
The Boeing 787, popularly called the Dreamliner, is known for its fuel efficiency, long-range capability, and modern onboard technology. Its addition is expected to improve passenger comfort and operational performance on Uganda Airlines’ international routes.
Uganda Airlines further noted that it is closely observing the operating conditions in the Middle East, particularly for flights to Dubai, and urged travellers to check for updates via official channels.
The carrier’s Global Call Centre remains available 24/7, offering assistance with bookings and travel inquiries through both phone and WhatsApp.
"Uganda Airlines is closely monitoring the operating environment in the Middle East regarding flights to Dubai. Passengers are advised to check for updates regularly through our official website and social media platforms," the airline emphasized.
This development coincides with the appointment of Girma Wake, the former Ethiopian Airlines chief executive credited with transforming the airline into one of Africa’s leading carriers. Wake, who led Ethiopian Airlines between 2004 and 2011 and later chaired its board, is renowned for creating strategic airline partnerships across the continent.
He has now joined Uganda Airlines as a consultant and advisor, offering his expertise to guide the national carrier in its growth and operational strategy.
