Nigeria’s police are investigating the sudden death of Destiny Boy, the 22-year-old singer whose real name was Afeez Adesina. Authorities say one person has been arrested as the Ogun State Police homicide unit takes over the case.

The news of his passing emerged on Sunday, sending shockwaves across social media, where fans and fellow artists expressed grief and concern. While the exact circumstances of his death remain uncertain, family members said he had been struggling with a long-term illness.

Destiny Boy has been buried according to Muslim funeral traditions.

Destiny Boy rose to prominence as an Afrofuji artist, blending Yoruba Fuji rhythms with contemporary Afrobeats. He first attracted nationwide attention in 2019 when his cover of Davido’s hit If went viral, later releasing more covers and original tracks that showcased his growing talent.

After his death, social media circulated videos that appeared to show his body being transported to a mortuary, sparking speculation about what caused his passing. Family members clarified that he had suffered from a persistent illness that triggered seizures.

In a video posted online, his mother Saida said the family had sought both medical treatment and traditional remedies for his condition. She described the illness as having “almost run him mad” and said they often had to hold him down during seizures to prevent him from running outside.

The singer’s death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from Nigerians, as well as questions about whether an autopsy was carried out. Musician Ruger took to X, saying: “No autopsy, we just have to accept that he's dead. May God RIP Destiny Boy.”

Destiny Boy began his career as a backup dancer for Fuji musician Pasuma at T2 Boys Studios in Agege, Lagos, before establishing himself as a solo artist. His death comes about a year after he and his partner Iremide welcomed their first child in November 2024, cutting short the life of a young artist many saw as a rising star.
