Police officers in Tigania East Sub-County, Meru County, have recovered 204 head of cattle that were stolen during a night raid, following what authorities described as a swift and coordinated security operation.

In a statement on Tuesday, the National Police Service (NPS) said the animals were recovered after officers launched an immediate pursuit soon after the theft was reported.

“Officers from the National Police Service in Tigania East Sub-County, Meru County, yesterday successfully recovered 204 head of cattle that had been stolen during a night raid in the area,” the statement said.

According to the police, the recovery was made possible through rapid response and coordinated efforts by security teams on the ground.

“The successful recovery followed a prompt response and coordinated pursuit by the officers,” the NPS said.

The stolen livestock was tracked to the Madoadoa area along the Isiolo–Gambela Road, where officers encountered the suspected cattle rustlers. Police said a confrontation ensued as the suspects attempted to evade arrest.

“The security team tracked the stolen animals to the Madoadoa area, along the Isiolo-Gambela Road, where they encountered and overwhelmed the cattle rustlers after a fierce exchange of fire,” the statement noted.

No casualties were reported in the incident.

Following the operation, all the recovered cattle were secured and returned to their owners.

“All the recovered animals were secured and handed back to their rightful owners,” the police said, describing the operation as a boost to community confidence in ongoing security efforts.

Livestock theft remains a major concern in parts of Meru and neighbouring counties, where pastoralism and mixed farming are key sources of livelihood.

The National Police Service said it is stepping up measures to address the crime and protect communities that depend on livestock.

“The National Police Service continues to intensify operations against livestock theft through coordinated patrols, multi-agency collaboration, and community partnerships, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding livelihoods and enhancing security,” the statement said.

Police also appealed to members of the public to support security agencies by sharing information that could help prevent or respond to crime.

“Members of the public are urged to continue cooperating with the police by providing information on any suspicious activity,” the NPS said.

Information can be shared through the toll-free emergency numbers 999, 911 or 112, or anonymously via #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp number 0709 570 000, police added.
