The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a nationwide safety advisory amid ongoing heavy rains that have triggered widespread flooding, warning of heightened risks as the Easter holiday period continues.
In a statement released on Saturday, the police confirmed that at least 112 people had lost their lives as of April 3, 2026, due to rain-related incidents across the country.
The advisory comes at a time when increased travel and outdoor activity typically characterise the holiday season, compounding the dangers posed by adverse weather.
“As the Easter holiday period progresses, the country continues to experience substantial rainfall in several regions, resulting in heightened safety risks for both travel and daily activities,” the statement read.
The NPS urged Kenyans to exercise caution and remain vigilant, emphasising that personal responsibility will be critical in preventing further fatalities.
“Vigilance and responsibility remain critical to preventing further loss of life,” the police said.
Motorists have been singled out as particularly vulnerable, with authorities warning against risky driving behaviour under the prevailing conditions.
The police advised drivers to strictly observe speed limits, maintain safe following distances, and avoid attempting to cross flooded roads.
“Motorists are especially advised to drive with extreme care by observing speed limits, remaining patient on the roads, maintaining safe distances, avoiding flooded roads, and ensuring their vehicles are in good mechanical condition,” the statement said.
Pedestrians were also cautioned to remain alert, especially in flood-prone areas and locations with reduced visibility due to heavy rains.
The police noted that fast-moving water and poor drainage systems in some areas pose significant risks even to those not travelling by vehicle.
Authorities further indicated that efforts are ongoing to repair infrastructure damaged by the floods, including roads and drainage systems.
However, the public has been warned to stay away from restricted or high-risk areas where such operations are underway.
“As operations continue to restore damaged infrastructure, including roads and drainage systems, the public is urged to cooperate with authorities, observe all safety advisories, and avoid restricted or high-risk areas,” the police added.
The advisory underscores growing concern over the impact of the heavy rains, which have disrupted transport, displaced communities and strained emergency response systems in several counties.
Reaffirming its mandate, the National Police Service said it remains fully committed to protecting lives and property during the ongoing crisis.
The agency also encouraged members of the public to report emergencies or incidents promptly using established communication channels.
“The National Police Service reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and remains reachable on our emergency lines: 999 or 911,” the statement said.
