A Nairobi court has handed down a 20-year prison term to a man convicted of sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl in Kibera, highlighting the judiciary’s commitment to protecting minors from sexual exploitation. The case, prosecuted by Michael Mutune of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), drew on testimony from six witnesses who described how the accused took advantage of the teenager while her mother was away working casual jobs.
The conviction, delivered by Principal Magistrate Murage at Kibera High Court, underscores the seriousness of the offence and the vulnerability of children subjected to predatory acts. In her ruling, Justice Murage said, “The court takes into account the grave nature of the offence, the young age of the victim, and the predatory circumstances under which the crime occurred.” She further emphasized that crimes against children inflict lasting trauma and must face firm legal consequences.
During the trial, it emerged that the accused, initially released on bond, fled in February 2024, causing delays in the court proceedings. He was eventually recaptured and returned to face justice, ensuring the case reached a decisive conclusion.
Justice Murage stated that the 20-year sentence is intended to serve as a deterrent to anyone targeting minors. “This sentence must send a clear message that the justice system will not tolerate crimes against children,” she said.
The ruling adds to a series of convictions by the ODPP in cases of gender-based violence, reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen enforcement of laws designed to shield children from sexual abuse and exploitation.
